"The Knesset Menorah"

The seven branch menorah is the oldest symbol of Judaism. The menorah not only does it predate the Star of David, but it was also an exclusively Israelite image, unlike the star which has been used sporadically by various cultures.

The menorah is a uniquely religious symbol that is described in the Hebrew Bible in detail from the Book of Exodus, where God directs exactly how to fashion one, to the prophet Zachariah. The inherent spiritual nature of the menorah resides in its promise to be the eternal symbol of God's abiding Presence among the People.
