"The Western Wall"

Different people experience the Western Wall in different ways. Many refer to a mystical connection that draws them closer and closer until that moment of moments when they stand before it, close enough to feel their breath echo off the ancient stones. Close enough to... touch. With trembling fingers, caress the stones that feel almost alive.

Others tell of a sense of disappointment, feeling somehow let down. It is, after all, merely rock, carved in Herodian style of massive blocks that don't even need mortar to hold them together. A sense of history, perhaps even connectedness with all the countless Jews who have traveled to slip a scrap of paper into its crevices. But not the powerful emotions they've heard others have experienced. Not overwhelming, just--nice.

And that's alright. It can be like that. Sometimes the bond will grow with each experience there. Or perhaps not. For some the spiritual power, the sense of hightend awareness of the sacred, is not to be found at the Kotel. Give it time. It will come. If not here, perhaps at the top of Massada.
